The Essential Theatre is currently accepting self-taped auditions from African American actors who identify as female (playing ages 21 through 65) for, “From the Mississippi Delta,” by Indesha Ida Mae Holland, PhD.
All roles are paid.
Self-tapes will be accepted from actors until January 28, 2022. Non AEA and AEA actors local to Washington, DC who can sing acapella with solid storytelling skills that inform exceptional character work are asked to submit using the following instructions:
- Fully vaccinated actresses not seen during February and March of 2020 are welcome to submit a taped contemporary comic or dramatic monologue of up to two minutes in length. If hired, you will need to submit verifiable proof of vaccination and may be subject to Covid-19 testing.
- All audition submissions should be sent as an MP4, google file or Drop Box link.
- If you have previously auditioned and need to be seen again; you will be included during callbacks. No need to submit.
- All submissions should be sent to production@theessentialtheatre.org. Subject line should state FMD Audition. Please make sure to attach your current head shot and resume.
- All actors should slate, introduce your monologue, and perform the piece. Immediately following your monologue, you should sing up to 16 bars of a song acapella. Audition tapes will be excepted until January 28th at 11:59 pm. No phone calls please.
- In person Callbacks will be held on the 24th and 25th of February.
- First Rehearsal on or about (OOA) May 23, 2022
- First Preview OOA June 21st. Open OOA June 23rd through July 12th. Thurs@ 7 pm, Friday and Sat @ 7:30 pm. Sat and Sun mats @ 3pm

The general days and times during which all rehearsals will take place are as follows:
- Mondays through Fridays 12 noon to 10:00 pm
- Saturdays and Sundays 10:00 am to 6 pm

All actors hired must be available for all rehearsals and performances.

Synopsis:
Inspired by Alice Walker's poem "Revolutionary Petunias," From the Mississippi Delta is the inspirational story of Playwright Indesha Ida Mae Holland as it details her poverty ridden, blossoming journey from Greenwood, Mississippi to the hallowed halls of academia. The play is an emotional tribute to unsung "sheroes" extraordinary, ordinary women who are the backbone of the African-American community.
