The Event

Thank you to our Sponsors:

The Annual Helen Hayes Awards are a celebration of the achievements of the Washington, DC-area theatre community. Gathering in the spring to present the Awards, we reflect on the year; honor and celebrate the artists, designers, playwrights, and productions; and have a big party – including dancing! – together.

In 2020, the Helen Hayes Awards (honoring productions in 2019) were held virtually. We look forward to celebrating an Awards ceremony again in 2023 to honor productions produced in the calendar year of 2022. The ceremony will return to The Anthem on May 22, 2023.

The 2020 Helen Hayes Awards Celebration

The 36th annual Helen Hayes Awards were celebrated over four weeks in August and September 2020 as a series of virtual events – both individual award announcements and a culmination video premiere. We recognized outstanding work on Washington, DC-area stages in 2019, reflected on this unprecedented time in our industry, and gathered more than 2,300 people in celebration.
