This class focuses on preparing the actor for musical theatre audition and performance, through careful attention to each actor/singer’s strengths and weaknesses. Emphasis will be on music and text interpretation, singing and performance techniques, relaxing and unleashing the voice, and selection of strong material. Students bring at least one memorized musical theatre song to the first class, and will have the option to work on more songs over the six weeks of the course.

Instructor: Broadway: Crazy for You. Off Broadway: Forever Plaid (original cast), Kander and Ebb’s The World Goes ‘Round, and the revival of George Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing. National tours: Brigadoon, The World Goes ‘Round. Studio Theatre: A Class Act (Helen Hayes Award nomination), Caroline or Change, Reefer Madness, (Helen Hayes Award nomination); Ford’s: Elmer Gantry, 1776, A Christmas Carol; Round House: A Year with Frog and Toad (Helen Hayes Award nomination); MetroStage: Musical of Musicals (Helen Hayes Award nomination); The Kennedy Center: The Happy Prince, The Flea and the Professor; Signature: 20 shows including Titanic, Disney's Freaky Friday, La Cage aux Folles (Helen Hayes Award), and Spin (Helen Hayes Award). He is an artistic associate at Olney Theatre where he was nominated for Helen Hayes Awards in The Sound of Music and Annie. He has directed and choreographed across the nation and received the 2013, 2014, 2017 Helen Hayes Award.
