The Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC), located in downtown Washington DC, seeks a Deck Chief to join the Stage Operations Department. Based at the Michael R. Klein Theatre, this position will serve as the lead run crew for STC’s productions, outside rentals, and special events as assigned by the Stage Operations Supervisor. Duties will include: working closely with Stage Management teams to maintain pre- and post-show set ups; assigning run crew tracks as well as running their own track; monitoring the quality and integrity of all scenic and prop elements for STC productions, presentations, and rentals (with special attention to the safety of weapons); making running repairs to scenic and prop elements and/or escalating repairs to the Stage Operations Supervisor; and overseeing the safe use during performances of flying systems, automation systems and special effects in the manner directed by STC’s Technical Director, Properties Director and/or the Stage Operations Supervisor. Outside of performance runs, this position will assist with load-in and strike of scenery for STC productions, and participate in routine venue maintenance. This is a full-time position with excellent benefits and an hourly rate of $21.50.

Suitable candidates will have a Bachelor’s Degree in theatre production or technical theatre, or the equivalent experience and training. An additional 1-2 years of professional experience as stage or run crew for theatrical performances is required. A keen eye for safety, as well as a willingness for ensuring that STC’s venues are maintained in a safe and orderly manner is essential. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience in counterweight flying, scenic construction, furniture repair, scenic painting, automated scenery, pyrotechnics, and/or crew leadership. This position will be regularly required to: work at height; lift up to 75lbs unaided; and make use of a full range of motion. A valid driver’s license and clean driving record are required. Flexibility and the ability to work evening and weekend performance schedules is essential.
