Voices of Zion: The Black Georgetown Cemeteries Project

Performance Dates
-

An immersive, original music-theatre work supported by crucial research, bringing new “life after death” to the complex, little known history of Black Georgetown. The stories of the residents of the adjacent Mt. Zion and Female Union Band Society cemeteries will showcase the obscured story of our city’s history: urban slavery; African-American benevolent organizations and their lesser known role in DC’s Underground Railroad; significant Black leaders including Charles Turner (“the Mayor of Black Georgetown”), and the complex relationships of Black and White inhabitants who lived, worked, and worshipped together.

Location:

  • Female Union Band Society-Mt Zion Cemeteries Memorial Park 27th St. off Q St. NW
  • Dumbarton United Methodist Church 3133 Dumbarton St. NW
