Opening Performance

Faction of Fools Theatre Company, DC’s Commedia dell’Arte theatre company, kicks off its 17th Getaway Season with a spritz and splash of sunshine in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING by William Shakespeare. Set in modern day Messina, Sicily at a luxurious boutique hotel, Shakespeare's treasured story of love-games, loyalty, and assumptions is given a heightened glow up with the Fools' signature theatrical style: Commedia dell'Arte. Despite utilizing two Renaissance forms, Shakespearean language and Commedia dell'Arte, Faction of Fools' production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING uplifts the modernity and universality of this centuries old play with clear physical storytelling and exceptional textual understanding. Using theatrical masks and high energy physicality, the Fools approach the play with honesty and earnestness by juxtaposing the comedy of love and desire with the tragedy of gossip culture and shame. At its core, Commedia dell'Arte is a form that pokes fun at society, often making fun of the powerful and celebrating the triumph of the powerless. The Fools seek such triumph with honesty, comedy, and commentary.
