The Government Inspector satirizes corruption and self deception. In Gogol’s lampoon of provincial bureaucracy, Hlestakov, a civil servant who is running out of money, travels from Saint Petersburg to a small Russian town where his imagination runs rampant. When bumbling town officials mistake him for an incognito inspector, a comedy of errors unfolds and chaos ensues. Fearful that the investigation will unmask the town’s corruption, the Mayor enlists the help of his fellow government officials to cover up their misdeeds. Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher.
