Alfred Hitchcock based his much-loved thriller on Knott’s deliriously spine-tingling play about a former tennis star, Tony Wendice, who has married sweet and unsuspecting Margot for her money. He arranges what he thinks is the perfect murder, but when the plot goes wrong, Inspector Hubbard from Scotland Yard (Olney Theatre stage veteran Alan Wade) – along with her old flame, the murder mystery novelist Max Halliday – mount a hair-raising investigation that comes down to the last possible, chilling moment.
