Theatre Washington supports an integrated artistic ecosystem made up of nearly 90 professional theatre organizations throughout the region. These organizations share resources, patrons, and artists, and are part of a strong network of regional and local support. While closely connected, each theatre also brings a unique artistic vision and educational mission to the community, contributing to the diverse and vibrant cultural landscape of the area.
Beyond its prolific artistic output, the region’s theatre industry represents a powerful economic engine. Collectively, these organizations create thousands of jobs and volunteer opportunities, pay nearly seventy million dollars annually to artists and staff, and are responsible for stewarding over one billion dollars in combined assets. This makes theatre not only a cultural cornerstone but also a major contributor to the region’s economic health and vitality.
In 2025, Theatre Washington conducted a comprehensive assessment of the financial and operational scope of our sector. By analyzing publicly available IRS Form 990 data for 89 theatre organizations in our region, we developed a clear snapshot of the industry’s size, scale, and economic impact.
The purpose of this reporting is to provide a high-level overview that supports advocacy, strengthens conversations around the value of the arts, and helps tell a unified story of collective impact. This analysis offers valuable insights that reinforce what those within the community already know: that theatre in Washington is both artistically essential and economically significant.
