theatreWashington has heard the growing voices speaking out for justice, transformation, and accountability in the Washington theatre industry. We stand with you and the concerned community to create the changes that will make Washington area theatres more equitable and better places to work. As the partnership organization for our region’s theatres, we support the many theatre professionals who bring stories to life on our stages. We recognize that we must work together to create an environment in which more people feel valued, heard, and supported. We are developing antiracist practices. We are committed to working with the community on the dismantling of systems that discriminate and are harmful to those vulnerable to systems of power.
We commit to continuing the dialogue to address accountability and the sharing of best practices through ongoing convenings. While we aren’t a governing body for our partner theatres, we can work to reduce the harm brought forth in your stories by listening, exploring mechanisms to report and share, and championing policies and strategies that will lead to institutional changes, including within theatreWashington.
Please reach out to Amy Austin, President & CEO, directly at aaustin@theatrewashington.org or 202-491-1685 with any questions or anything further you’d like to discuss. We want to hear from you and want to work with you to make this a better theatre community. We will also share our efforts to ensure that our own practices and policies create and support an environment and workplace that is respectful of all and to which we hold ourselves accountable.
