FREE. Part of the Women's Voices Theater Festival.
Written and performed by Caroline Stephanie Clay and directed by Walter Dallas, this performance is a concert reading of a new play in development examining the life of the 19th century sculptress, Edmonia “Wildfire” Lewis. The play is a rich celebration of one of the most blazingly original voices of the 19th century, sharing the joys and challenges of creative genius, emancipation, artistic agency and freedom. Her talents as a sculptress, largely self-taught, emerged in the days following the Civil War while a student at Oberlin College. An African American and Native American sculptress, her work is known for incorporating themes relating to African American and American Indian people into the Neoclassical style.
