On Friday evening October 26, 2012, at one of the most glamorous sites in Washington — the fabulous Four Seasons — a tradition continued with theatreWashington’s 23rd Annual Gala to benefit its education and community building programs.
The evening was replete with a sensational silent auction, one of Washington’s most exciting live auctions conducted by the one and only Sebastian Clarke of Doyle New York and Antiques Roadshow, performances by stars of Washington stages, and the presentation of the prestigious “Helen’s Star.”
“Helen’s Star,” just like the Helen Hayes Award, is named for the First Lady of the American Theatre and native Washingtonian who epitomized excellence and accomplishment. In that spirit, the evening also served as an occasion to honor and thank extraordinary individuals who, with their generosity and efforts, have changed the landscape of Washington theatre.
The 2012 recipients were three daring dreamers who adroitly harnessed the transformative power of theatre. With an arsenal of fortitude, leadership, and vision, they not only changed the landscape of Washington theatre, but also literally shaped and redefined the District, Maryland, and Virginia. The 2012 Helen’s Star was presented to Arena Stage Artistic Director Molly Smith, Imagination Stage Founder/Executive Director Bonnie Fogel and MetroStage Producing Artistic Director Carolyn Griffin.
theatreWashington Star Gala was proudly supported by the generosity of American Airlines, the Official Airline of the Helen Hayes Awards; Bloomberg BNA who has generously provided Helen Hayes organization publications for 27 years, Four Seasons Hotels, Vornado/Charles E. Smith, and The Washington Post.
