Hey Dapper Dan, hey Beau Brummelly, hey Senator, hey Janitor - you’re never fully dressed without a costume designer. When drafting, crafting, or even darning the occasional sock, a costume designer’s work enhances a character’s personality, presents an evolving plot of color, and identifies time and setting through a selection of garments and accessories, all while keeping in mind the director’s aesthetics, the lighting designer’s color palette, and any limitations introduced by a choreographer’s movement and set design. This year’s Helen Hayes Awards Nominees for Outstanding Costume Design in a Resident Production are the epitome of fashion as art.
